Royal Wootton Bassett 3rds 31 – Bath Saracens 57

Under glorious skies and on a firm surface Sarries finished off the season on a high with a 9 try 57-31 win away to Wootton Bassett. Sarries got off to a bit of a scrappy start but were first on the scoreboard when the French dynamo Werner Vasseur danced and pirouetted his way through the Wootton Bassett defence for a fine solo try to open the score, which was converted by Alex from under the sticks.

Sarries didn’t have it all their own way after that though, with Wootton Bassett running some strong lines and showing a quality offloading game to keep the ball alive and capitalise on some slack Sarries tackling and notched up 2 quick fire tries of their own to take the lead. Some more quick feet and a good turn of pace from the flying Frenchman saw Sarries keep in touch with their opposition as both teams traded scores for a 26-19 lead to the home side at the break.

The second half though was to belong almost entirely to Sarries as the Bath team cut down on the errors and started to utilise their more mobile and agile back line to good effect. Cutting holes in the home defence at will to run in 6 tries in the second half. The pick of the bunch being a fine long range effort from JP and a rather bizarre penalty try when Owen Swabey had already scored and finally pulling of a dagger move to bamboozle the home side defence for JP again to dot down under the posts. Wootton didn’t go quietly into the night though and responded with a try of their own after having built a period of pressure in the Sarries 22.

On the whole a decent performance and a fine way to finish the season with three 50 pt wins and scoring 25 tries in the last three games.

Try Scorers: Werner (2), Eddie Bell, Jack Goodfriend, Nick Williams, JP (2), Joshua Jones and I don’t care what the ref says Owen (penalty try)
