Bath Saracens 19 Supermarine 5

Royal Wootton Bassett 3rds - 22nd April 2017

A solid defensive performance and three first half tries were the foundations of a comfortable win for the BMT sponsored Sarries in their first home fixture of 2018.

Sarries have seen several games lost as the result of a slow start this season, however coach Dean Taylor had the squad fired up prior to kick off and this was evident in the early exchanges. The visitors had barely ventured out of their half when winger Alex Caffreys-Gage ran in the home sides first try. This was followed by a second from scrum half Owen Swabey, and a third from captain Alex Reilly, who also added two conversions.

Sarries continued to threaten the visitor’s line, however despite having the lion’s share of territory and possession they were unable to able to increase their score. The half time whistle saw them turn around with a healthy 19-0 lead.

The second half was not as exciting with Sarries stubborn defence keeping out everything that the visitors through at them. In attack they regularly threatened to extend their lead but were thwarted by final passes and some solid defence from the visitors. Supermarine managed a solitary touchdown mid-way through the half, but despite constant pressure from Sarries in their attempt to secure a bonus point with their fourth try, there was no further score.

After the disappointment of the narrow defeat the week before, Sarries were delighted to secure their first win of the year. Alex Carvlin put in a solid performance at full back on his return from a nasty injury he suffered early in the season, and deservedly collected the ‘man of the match’ award.

Sarries will now look to maintain their recent good form. The next fixture promises to be their toughest challenge yet as they visit undefeated league leaders Corsham.
